I attended a workshop about becoming a successful “Plant Parent” so I could discover the secret to watering my houseplants effectively. I have some that are thriving and others, well, not so much.
What I learned is that it’s usually not about watering. The number one factor determining plant health is lighting: bright light or low light, indirect or direct. The right lighting is the main ingredient to keep plants happy, and different plants vary in their lighting requirements.
I think there is a parallel in organizations where lighting is the culture and watering is the task. Everyone thinks of water as the main issue impacting satisfaction and growth, but it’s really the environment that determines success or not. Get the culture right, and people can adapt with far more regularity than they can in the wrong conditions.
Before you assume that the drooping energy level needs more resources, consider whether you have the right conditions for thriving.
