In addition to running the country and launching a presidential campaign, the Biden administration has formally begun planning for a potential presidential transition. I’m sure they hope they don’t need it, but it is a congressionally mandated process, designed to ensure that the government continues functioning regardless of the election results.
While ensuring the continuity of the government has more consequences than the smooth operation of an ordinary organization, the model is one that others should adopt. You never know when a transition will occur and having some preparation is a prudent risk strategy. Sharing the fundamentals, such as the location of passwords, emergency contact information, and key documents can help keep things running smoothly should an unexpected departure occur.
When you dismiss the idea because you “don’t have time,” think of White House chief of staff Jeff Zients who is chairing the White House Transition Coordinating Council. I think he has a few more things on his plate than you do! And while you may not have Congress to mandate your process, it’s a good idea to do it on your own anyway. The time to prepare for a transition is when you’re not in the midst of one.
