I had a client who had a project weighing on their mind since they assumed their position a year ago. It was one of those “I should get to this” projects that never seemed to rise to the top of the to-do list. My advice: cross it off the list. If it hasn’t mattered in a year, it doesn’t matter, period.
But if it’s a project that he needs to do (not just should), then by all means block off a day or two on the calendar and get it done. Stop wasting the mental space thinking about it every day for a year. Do it or forget it. Thinking about doing it is a futile exercise.
Blocking off a day — whether at home or work — always sounds impossible but we do it all the time. People get sick. Kids get sick. We go to trainings or conferences. We take vacations. We have all-day retreats…and things still function when we return.
Be ruthless with that lingering project. Create space on your calendar right now, or banish it from your mind forever. To paraphrase Yoda, Do. Or Do Not. There is no trying to get to it.
