A 19-year-old took over ownership of my favorite local pizza place. (Yes, 19!!!) The food has remained the same delicious pie that I have come to love, but what I’ve noticed is a change in marketing and social media use.
There is now a “text club” where I receive a reasonable number of messages, almost always with coupons. Instead of sending the discounts outright, he has added quirky engagement tactics, such as guessing a number between 1-100 for a greater reward or guessing the winner of the Super Bowl for additional savings. He’s also advertising on the radio and sponsoring the local news.
It’s a reminder to all the “old folks” that the younger generation sees things differently. He is using tactics that appeal to different demographics in ways that weren’t used before. While you don’t have to turn your business over to a 19-year-old, you’d be wise to learn from them about how to reach your audience.
