While in Denver, we visited the Molly Brown House Museum and learned more about her story. Brown is more famous for her role in helping Titanic survivors (played in the movie by Kathy Bates), but what impressed me more was her role as an advocate for women’s voting rights.

Brown lived in Colorado, where women already had the right to vote, but that wasn’t enough for her. In the 1900’s when travel was difficult and women were held to certain roles, Brown used her wealth and influence to advocate as a suffragette in other states. She even ran for Congress in 1914! It would have been easier for her to stay home and enjoy her status in the community, but that was not the path she chose.

We need more people like Brown who concern themselves with the greater good and are willing to put in the effort to help others attain the rights and privileges they already enjoy. Be that person who shares time, talent, and treasure with those less fortunate.
