I was one of about 30,000 people watching the Oscars on Hulu when the coverage abruptly stopped —before the Best Actress and Best Picture awards were given. I already missed the opening numbers because Hulu kicked me out after the Red Carpet show and forced me to log in again, and then it disconnected before the end. Not a good experience!

Organizations often try to expand their offerings without taking into account the differences required to deliver them. Streaming a live special event is not the same as streaming pre-recorded shows. Catering is a different business than running a restaurant. Offering online courses are not in-person courses with a camera. Being a florist isn’t the same as growing fresh flowers.

Before venturing into new territory, treat it as a separate entity with the due diligence and planning that you invested for the original offering. Poorly delivered expansions reflect negatively on your entire organization, not just the new portion.

What was on my screen as the two top awards were being given. A Hulu fail!
