A certain food truck used to come from out of town every quarter or so. I previously waited in a long line for over 40 minutes to get their food but it was worth it. The company has expanded its franchises and now a truck visits every few weeks. When I went there yesterday, there was no line at all.

The same is true of my favorite restaurant in Chicagoland. Part of what made it special was the buzz of people. You knew there would be lines both in person and in the drive-thru but that was part of the experience. Earlier this week, I walked right up to the counter, perhaps because they have also focused on franchising and now have outlets in most of the suburbs.

The allure of “more” is tempting but it’s also a paradox. Often, the more valuable product or service is the one that isn’t for everyone or isn’t available everywhere. If you are expanding your reach, evaluate what you are giving up as well as what you may be getting.
