When I checked into my hotel room, the television screen was on with a big welcome message — for Georgia. So much for making a good first impression.

I’ve had the same thing happen with newsletter mailings — one in particular that still addresses me as Mike — and other personalization fails.

If you are making the effort to utilize individual names on your messaging, you need to double and triple-check that you’ve got it right. Generic is far better than wrong.

  1. Completely agree! I had a similar experience a couple of months ago. When I mentioned it to the front desk in passing, they said they’d address it… they never did.
