When I worked at a university that had a physical therapy program, I saw the professional rivalry between PT and those who pursued chiropractic training elsewhere. Those who studied physical therapy believed their method was superior as it addressed the root cause of injuries and focused on long-term resolution. Chiropractors were sought out by patients who wanted immediate relief, but some viewed the field’s therapeutic methods with disdain since continual adjustments were required by the patient.

It comes down to different philosophies of treatment, centered around that age-old dilemma of balancing short-term and long-term needs. Ascertaining between the two is a helpful yardstick when making any kind of decision: What do you gain now in exchange for what you give up later — or vice versa — what are you giving up now for future benefits?

It’s a decision when choosing to pursue physical therapy or chiropractic treatments, but it shows up everywhere. Pay less in rent now or build equity in home ownership. Eat that cookie now or have lower cholesterol later. Sacrifice to go back to school now and earn a promotion later. Cancel the cable subscription now and have funds to vacation later.

Almost always the choice is short-term sacrifice for long-term gain or short-term gain with long-term consequences so make your decision with intentionality before you jump at what sounds the best today. t’s rare that you can win both now and later.
