It used to be that we described a dichotomy by saying something was black or white. In today’s world, it feels like a more apt descriptor would be to say that it’s Red or Blue.
With about half of the country voting one way and the other half in a different direction, if we want to move forward, we need to take steps to become more purple.
I am reminded of LGBTQ activist Donna Red Wing and the social conservative leader Bob Vander Plaats who found a way to have a civil conversation, and ultimately a friendship, despite their many differences.
Instead of gloating or commiserating with like-minded friends, I encourage you to have one “purple” conversation to gain some understanding. Why did others vote as they did? Do you have a difference in values or a difference in information? Where is there common ground? What can you learn from each other?
The 2022 Midterms will be here before you know it. Let’s start now to help the issues take priority over the politics.
