leadership dot #3518: Hitsville

We too often think that being influential equates to being big. To disabuse that notion, one needs to look no further than music mogul Berry Gordy. In 1959, Gordy borrowed $800 from his family and started Motown records in his home. In that studio, 191 songs reached the top of the charts between 1959-1971! And the music wasn’t just by one performer; fifty artists from Motown reached Number 1.

I’ve been to Gordy’s home that is now preserved as Hitsville, U.S.A. in Detroit. It’s a regular house in a residential neighborhood — you can almost drive by without noticing. But from that modest place came music and influence that created the second original American musical genre.

Think about Gordy when you are discouraged. You don’t need a fancy anything to make an impact with your work.
